If you're still going to the store and paying for decorations, you're about to discover just how easy and inexpensive it can be to be festive. After all, you already have costumes and candy to spend money on. Wouldn't it be nice to shave a little off your expenses from somewhere? In addition to printable Halloween stencils and decorations, here are some other great homemade ideas:
- Footprints
Not only are a pair of footprints along your sidewalk, traveling up to your door, the easiest Halloween decorations to make, they'll help keep kids where you want them. Whether you don't want them cutting through your flower beds or tripping over your gnomes, kids are likely to follow a path laid out for them.
All you have to do is cut monster footprints in two sponges. Pour washable paint into a tray and use the sponges to create footprints.
- Hanging Egg Carton Bats
One can never have too many bats. These are one of the easiest homemade Halloween decorations to make because all you need are egg cartons, black paint and string. Simply cut the cartons so you have three holders for each one. When you turn it upside down, the center holder is the body, the other two are wings.
Go ahead and shape the wings with scissors so they're a little more pointed. Poke two hole in the top of the body, you are going to thread your string through them for hanging purposes. Paint them black and let them dry. You can make eyes to glue on if you want by cutting white pieces of paper in circles and coloring in the pupils. If you have a hole punch to use, this is even better!
- Garbage Bag Ghost
If you are looking for Halloween decorations to make that you can literally throw together in minutes, these ghosts are it! Simply blow up a balloon to create the head and place it inside the garbage bag. Use string to gather the bag under the head and to hang it from on top of the head. If you have time, use a black magic marker to draw on eyes and a mouth. Alternatively, you can always use pillow cases, old cut up sheets or cheap fabric you find on sale.
- Witch Cauldron
Have an old round clay pot sitting in the garage? Paint it black! Then, when it's dry, use white patio paint and a small flat brush to write Witch Cauldron on it. You can also paint ghosts, skulls, cats or moons on it too. These are perfect candy dishes!
- Door Hangers
One sheet of inexpensive orange foam board will make at least four door hangers! Simply cut rectangular pieces and then use a wide-mouthed cup or mug to cut out a place for the door knob. Either draw or use stencils to cut out ghosts, bats, cats, etc., and then paint them black or white and glue them onto the door hanger.
